  Goldsby - Wu; Pro-Am / 2015.

A.J. Goldsby I (2200) - Logan Wu (1956);
[A05]
The PRO-AM Tournament, (Open Section) / Round #03
New Orleans, LA (USA) / March 14th, 2015.

  [A.J. Goldsby I]

     **************************************************************

In this game, I play the young wunderkind, (9 or 10); Logan Wu. He was no pushover as the analysis of this game shows.
(My opponent - here - is already a very strong player ... its almost scary to think how good he might be in 5-10 years!!!)
{The above note - just the writing in gray - was added: Friday; May 22nd, 2015.}

1.Nf3 Nf6; 2.b3 g6; 3.Bb2 Bg7; 4.e4 0-0!?; [RR 4...d6]
5.e5 Ne8; 6.d4 d6; 7.Nbd2 Nc6; 8.h3 d5!?;
After a very unusual opening, Black allows White too much presence in the center.
(I thought that the safest course was to begin to trade off White's central pawn wedge.) [8...a5]

9.a3 e6; 10.Bd3 Ne7; 11.Qe2 b6; 12.g4!?,
An obvious attacking move, with the current Pawn structure, many of Black's pieces cannot get over to the King-side.
(The box shows that simply castling was probably better.)

   r1bqnrk1/p1p1npbp/1p2p1p1/3pP3/3P2P1/PP1B1N1P/1BPNQP2/R3K2R b KQ g3 0 12

Even though the engine shows that the position is only about equal, I was happy with the results of the opening.
(I avoided a book line and felt that I had good chances in the middlegame.)
[12.0-0, '+/=']

12...c5; 13.c3 Bb7; 14.Kf1 Nc6; 15.Kg2 Qe7; 16.Rae1 Nc7; 17.h4 f5; 18.gxf5 exf5!?; 19.b4 Ne6;
20.Qe3 Ncd8; 21.Reg1 Nf7; 22.Kf1 c4; 23.Bb1 Nh6; 24.Ng5 Ng4; 25.Qg3 Nxg5!?;
This was a dangerous Pawn gambit to accept ... for as far ahead as I could see, White will have all the play. [25...a5!?]

26.hxg5 Qxg5; 27.Nf3 Qe7; 28.Bc1 Rae8; 29.Qh3 Bh8; 30.Ng5 h5; 31.Bf4 Bf6; 32.Qh4,
Obviously, I could not capture the Bishop on f6.

                         [ </= 32.exf6?? Qe1+; 33.Kg2 Qxf2#. ]

32...Bxg5?;
Even the engine can see that after the capture of the Knight on g5, Black is lost - the second player can no longer control the dark squares.

                         [ I was looking at the sacrifice on g4 ... and thought that the machine would reject such a wild concept:

>/=  32...Bg7[]33.Rxg4!! fxg434.Be3 Bxe535.Bxg6! Bg336.Qxh5 Rxf2+37.Kg1[] Rh2;

38.Bf7+! Kf839.Qh8+! Rxh840.Rxh8+ Kg741.Rxe8 Qd742.Rg8+ Kf643.Rg6+ Ke7;

44.Be6 Qa445.Rg7+ Kd646.Kg2! ±  ('+/') (White is clearly better - and maybe close to winning.) ]

33.Bxg5 Qh7; 34.Rg2 Re6; 35.f3 Nh6; 36.Rhg1 Kf7; 37.Qf4 Ng8; 38.Bh4 Ne7; 39.Bf6 Ke8;
40.Qh4 Rf7; 41.f4 Kd7; 42.Rg5 Qh6; 43.Kf2! b5; 44.Kf3 a6?;  [>/= 44...Rfxf6™]

45.Qg3!?,
I am probably guilty of over-preparing here, it was better to simply capture on e7.

                         [ >/= 45.Bxe7! Rfxe7; 46.Qh3 Rf7; 47.Qg2 Ke848.Rxg6, '±' ]

45...Bc8?;
Now Black had one last chance to sack on f6, but was VERY short of time. This was also the 3rd round of the day,
maybe both players were a little tired. (I know that I was.)

     2b5/3knr2/p3rBpq/1p1pPpRp/1PpP1P2/P1P2KQ1/8/1B4R1 w - - 0 46

Now White regains his button and Black's minor piece is the textbook definition of a bad Bishop!

The rest really does not require any further comment.
46.Bxe7 Kxe7; 47.Rxg6 Rxg6; 48.Qxg6 Qxg6; 49.Rxg6 Be6; 50.Kg3 Rh7; 51.Kh4 Rh8;
52.Rg5 Rf8;  53.Rxh5 Kd7; 54.Rh7+ Ke8; 55.Kg5 Rg8+; 56.Kf6 Bc8; 57.e6 Rf8+;
58.Ke5 Rg8;  59.Bxf5 Rf8;  60.Bg6+, Black Resigns, 1-0.

Many thanks to my young opponent. He was kind, thoughtful and very polite! AND - my apologies to both my young opponent and his parents. To the best of my knowledge - I don't think I said anything that could be considered unfair OR derogatory ... however, IF I did, then I would ask for their forgiveness. I can relate how polite Logan was ... he seemed somewhat intimidated by my status as a master. (His Mom came up and asked me if Logan could ask me a few questions about our game ... this was not necessary, as I nearly always will discuss/analyze the struggle with my opponent ... once the game is actually finished.)
---> This note, see just above, was added: Friday; May 22nd, 2015.

Here, it is time to answer some e-mail.  **sigh**  (I will endeavor to remain positive and not engage in overly nasty rhetoric.)

One player wrote me about this game ... he said MANY negative things. (I would print the e-mail in its entirety here, maybe even with the persons name and correct email address. However, as I understand things, this is a violation of both "norms" - what is correct for the Internet - and even some state laws ... letters of this sort cannot be used without the owner's full knowledge and consent. AND ... there are probably times when publishing an actual e-mail is not a good idea, especially as this e-mail had a number of disturbing moments and lots of bad language.)

This user basically had the following complaints about this web page:
   #1.) I did a very poor job of annotating this game.
   #2.) I bragged - nearly constantly - about my great victory.
   #3.) That I (somehow) depicted my young opponent in an extremely bad light.
   #4.) This person also brought my personal views - on certain moral issues - into play.

On the first count - I plead guilty ... but with an explanation. This is NOT a GM game ... although my opponent may become a GM in the future.
(No one paid me to do this, I did it for free. I would rather save 95% of my energy on the fantastic games played by some of the world's best players. And I do not think I owe anyone any apologies OR explanation ... not on this count. ---> It is my website, and I manage it the way that I see fit and do what I consider to be best. It is also based on the types of material that my fans have told me they want ... so here, it is simple "supply-and-demand" concept at work here.)

As regarding the second item of his complaint, I must submit that I did not do this, not at all. I leave it for the general public to judge me in this matter.

On the third count of the indictment, I (again) plead not guilty. I am 99% sure this is just someone trying to start trouble and create a problem ... where none existed. (This would be the classical definition of the word "troll" on the Internet, and is simply someone who simply tries to stir up trouble.)

As for the fourth count of this person's complaint ... I simply refer you to the Constitution of the United States.
[Freedom of speech - for everyone ... and NOT just for the PC (PC = politically correct) group(s) of people.]
PERIOD!!!!!

      *********************************************

I also got another e-mail - this one was a lot more nasty and was unsigned and basically used a "throw-away" email. (A long string of letters and numbers ... in my experience, no one uses this type of e-mail {on a permanent basis} ... it is just too hard to remember.)

This person claimed to be at the tournament ... and said that I acted incorrectly ... even swearing at my opponents. He also accused me of being abusive towards my opponents. While this might have been true in the past, (a long time ago); I am nearly 100% certain that it was NOT the case here.
(END OF LINE.)

However, IF you were at this tournament, and want to offer your opinion about all of this, I will publish your e-mail (unedited) ...
but with the caveat that I must be certain that: A.) You were there. (and) B.) That I must feel you are telling the truth and are free of prejudice.

I used Houdini 3.0 and Deep Fritz 14 to check my analysis.

I prepared this page within days of returning from the Pro-Am. (March, 2015.) It was posted approximately 2-3 days later.
