Morelia/Linares, 2007
One
of the best and most interesting tournaments of the year must be the Super-GM
Linares tournament. In keeping with the stature of this tournament, I have
created this page for it.

With
two rounds to go in the Morelia/Linares tournament, Anand is in clear
first place, and the surprising young wunderkind, Magnus Carlsen,
is in clear second. [more]

By
drawing in the last round with the ever dangerous, GM Vassily Ivanchuk,
GM Vishy Anand
won Morelia/Linares ... clear first ... by a whole point. (8.5
out of a possible 14, or "+3.") Not only that, but its
is almost certain that Anand will be Number One on the FIDE
rating
list
in April! (Anand has waited a long time for this well-deserved
honor!)
Young
GM
Magnus Carlsen, after a brilliant tournament, faltered in the
last round and lost to one of the tail-enders. So, in the end, he only
finished tied for second. (With 7.5 points.) However, as he was the
lowest rated participant, second wasn't such a bad place to be! (In
fact, I will be curious to see what Carlsen's rating will be on the next
FIDE
rating list.)
GM's
Levon Aronian and Peter Svidler tied for 4th and 5th, (with
seven points); and Ivanchuk was just a half point shy of these
two.
Veselin
Topalov and Peter Leko brought up the rear, with Leko finishing in last
place, but thanks only to having the poorer tiebreaks. (A tie-break
match is being arranged between the two to determine who really deserves
the title of ... ... ... " ultimate
cellar-dweller.")
And
... at one
time, GM Alexander Morozevich was DEAD LAST! But after a late surge,
he actually managed to tie for second!!!!! Who'da thunk it? [Read
